High Cholesterol

High cholesterol, also known as hyperlipidemia or hypercholesterolemia, is a condition where there are excessive amounts of lipids (fats) in the bloodstream. While lipids are necessary for the body’s normal functioning, having too many can lead to a buildup of fatty deposits, or plaque, in the arteries. Over time, this plaque can grow silently within the arteries, increasing the risk of serious health issues like coronary artery disease.

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), it is recommended that individuals undergo their first cholesterol screening between the ages of 9 and 11, with follow-up tests every five years. As people age, more frequent testing is advised: every one to two years for men aged 45 to 65 and women aged 55 to 65, and annually for those over 65. If a person’s cholesterol levels are outside the desired range or have risk factors such as a family history of high cholesterol, heart disease, or conditions like diabetes, more frequent testing may be necessary.

Understanding the

Symptoms

High cholesterol is often asymptomatic, making it difficult to detect without a blood test. However, the long-term effects of untreated high cholesterol can lead to various serious health issues. Some of the health issues includes:

✅Stroke
✅Heart Attack
✅Coronary Artery Disease

✅Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)
✅High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

Understanding these potential complications highlights the importance of regular cholesterol monitoring and management.

Overcoming high cholesterol is a team effort, and having the right support can make all the difference. Medical experts, including doctors and dietitians, are vital for creating effective treatment plans tailored to your specific needs. In addition, experienced health coaches can help you implement these plans, offering encouragement, practical tips, and accountability to keep you on track with your health goals

While coaching can significantly enhance your journey, it is essential to remember that it complements rather than replaces medical treatment. Coaches do not diagnose or prescribe medication unless properly certified to do so. Instead, coaching should be viewed as an additional layer of support that works alongside your prescribed treatments, helping you stay on track and maintain a healthier, more balanced life.
