Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder, previously referred to as manic-depressive illness or manic depression, is a mental health condition that affects the mood, energy, thinking patterns, and behavior of an individual. This disorder is marked by alternating episodes of mania (or hypomania) and depression.

Around 1 in every 150 adults, which amounts to about 40 million individuals or 0.53% of the world’s population, were found affected by bipolar disorder in 2019. This mental health condition is predominantly experienced in adults of working age but also occurs among younger individuals. Besides, a Bipolar Disorder Statistics by the SingleCare Team reveals that:

    • Bipolar disorder affects an estimated 2.8% of U.S. adults annually, with those diagnosed often experiencing severe impairment, as indicated by 82.9% of cases classified as such.
    • The average age of onset is 25 years old.
    • Individuals with bipolar disorder face significant risks, including an average reduction in lifespan of 9.2 years, a high suicide rate of 15-17%, and a substantial likelihood (up to 60%) of developing substance use disorders.

According to WebMd, scientists still don’t know what exactly causes bipolar disorder, but they think genetics play a big role. Other causes include changes in the brain and environmental factors, which researchers currently study to determine their relationships to the disorder, how they might help prevent it, and how they could influence treatment.

Understanding

Signs and Symptoms

In some cases, severe manic or depressive episodes can lead to psychotic symptoms like delusions (irrational beliefs) or hallucinations, seeing or hearing things that are not present. It’s important to note that each person’s experience is distinct, and the manifestations of the condition can differ widely.

During a manic episode, a person experiences a very high mood and increased energy. They may have a sense of euphoria, feel extremely excited, happy, and restless. Other symptoms include:

✅ Appearing abnormally jumpy or wired
✅ Speaking fast or being unusually talkative
✅ Having racing or jumbled thoughts
✅ Distractibility

Inflated self-esteem
Doing impulsive, uncharacteristic, or risky things
Increased agitation and irritability
Hypomania

Throughout an episode, the symptoms persist for a significant portion of each day, occurring almost daily, that may last for longer periods, such as several days or weeks.
